    • Abstract:
Culture is a defining characteristic for individuals in every locale around the world. Cultural competence is a combination of academic and interpersonal skills that enable the healthcare professional to increase understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities. This article reviews 20 cultural immersion studies whose outcomes culminate in increased cultural competency. Results are divided into qualitative and quantitative measures and key observations. The studies found an almost invariably positive correlation between cultural immersion and subsequent cultural competency. A pattern of three key aspects were discovered during this review: length of immersion, depth of immersion, and pre-immersion didactic learning.
